OUR NEW BLOG IS UP & RUNNING!

Dear parents and caregivers,

Thankyou for being so patient while I fixed the problem with our classroom blog!  This is a blog I have used previously and has many informative links which you might like to explore with your child.

A great start to school: The children have had such a positive start and it has been a real pleasure getting to know them a little more everyday.  They have had a lot to take in as they adapt and respond to a new environment, routines, activities, expectations and people!  This transition time is exciting and tiring.  You may even find as their day extends to a 3pm finish that they will benefit from an earlier bed time.

We are learning to... talk about our learning! I am writing less on the blog about what the children are doing in the class to provide an opportunity for discussion between your child and family members.   Being able to talk about their day helps your child develop thinking and speaking skills, as well as to help consolidate new learning.  We use the language 'We are learning to...' through out school and you can ask your child what they are learning to do as they will be familiar with it.  I will post photos to support these conversations.

At Home Reading:  Guided Reading is a small group led by a teacher (myself) where all the children have similar learning needs.  In Room 20 Guided Reading takes place on Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday which is when they will bring a reading book home.  On Thursday we have Inquiry Day where we are learning about our theme.  On these days children will pick a 'choosing book' that they have read before.  This is important practice for them and helps build fluency, comprehension and confidence.  On Friday we publish our poem of the week and children take it home over the weekend to return on Monday.  Please see the 'Sight Word Book' pages that are in their books.  At this stage we are focussing on letters and letter sounds and will then move onto sight words.

Term Topic: This term we are celebrating Matariki, the Maori New Year.  In doing so, we will be learning about stars, as well as Maori legends.  Room 19 and Room 20 are also going to celebrate the different cultures that we have in our classrooms, and would love to learn about the ways your home country celebrates the New Year and any beliefs around stars.

Please help your child choose something to share with the rest of the class.  It would be great if it could stay at school for the week, or longer.  Ideas of things to share are:  songs, books, flags, special ornaments, costumes, hats or a photograph.

We would also love to cook traditional foods!  Please let me know if you would like to come into Room 20 and take some small cooking groups.  We have some kitchen equipment available and have been able to make roti, fry bread, pancakes, soups, bread, soups, butter, and pizzas in the past!

'Getting to Know Your Child' survey:  Please take the time to complete this online survey.  This survey has been designed to help develop a learning focussed relationship with your child, and to guide the direction of teaching so that it is relevant and important to them.  Language, culture, interests and strengths are the centre of student learning in Room 20.  Concerns are addressed and areas to develop are supported so that learners feel part of a safe learning environment.  I appreciate that you are taking the time to complete this survery and share about your child.  Getting to Know Your Child Survey

I am really looking forward to spending the term with such a special group of students.

Thankyou,
