MESSAGES FROM MISS ELLIS

Kia ora parents and caregivers,

First off, what a great start to school everyone has made.  The children are settling in very well, picking up the school routines and making friends.  There is so much learning going in, as well as new adjustments in this important time of life.

A big thanks for your support as your children transition into school life.  Arriving at school well before the bell goes allows them to unpack their belongings and bond with their class mates.  I encourage them to unpack their school bags by themselves as this develops their self management skills as well as their sense of responsibility and pride.

Now for the notices!

  • Spring Fair: Saturday 1 November.  Come and be involved! This is a great way for parents new to Arahoe, or those returning, to become part of our amazing community.  We do need help and you can provide this by helping man the Playdough Palace stall we have or the Sausage Sizzle on the day.  The more the merrier as this means you can rotate on and off.  Playdough Palace is Room 19 and Room 20's stall and we need donations from parents of playdough, or playdough ingredients: flour, salt, oil, food colouring, and glitter/sand etc.  Please come and put your name on our parent helper list if you are able to contribute.  Does anyone have a marquee we could borrow for the day to provide sun shelter for the Playdough Palace?
  • Gardening Helpers: We are planting flower seeds next week as part of our topic 'We Are Who We Are.'  The flowers will then be planted in the Ranui Community Gardens Bee and Butterfly Garden.  For this to be successful we need 4 or 5 parents or family members to teach a small group of children how to plant the seedlings.  Please let me know if you can do this on Monday, Tuesday or Wednesday next week at any time between 10.40 and the end of the school day.  All materials are provided by myself and Ranui Community Gardens!
  • Ranui Community Garden Field Trip:  We will go on out field trip to plant the seedlings in Week 6 on Tuesday 18 November (to be confirmed).  We will need at least 6 parent helpers on the day.  Great news- we only need to cover the bus costs!
  • At Home Reading Group for Parents:  This is a new initiative which supports parents by showing them the best way to undertake reading 'homework' without stress or fuss.  Please let me know if you would be interested in joining a one off group to be held one afternoon next week, straight after school.  It would run for one hour.  You are your child's best teacher and loving reading is the best start for their journey through school.
  • Litter Free Lunch Box Challenge: We have a four week litter free lunch box challenge!  May I add- it has an awesome prize!  Please see information below.
  • Whanau Wall:  In relation to our term topic please help your child find a picture of their family to bring to school.  We are also mapping where our families are from so in the mornings before school, please feel free to come in and help add your child's name.  Alternatively you can write a note in their homework book.

Well, I think that should keep us all busy!  It has been great getting to know your children over the last week.  There is a wonderful feel about the Reception Room as the children reach out to each other and support each other through out the day!

Please feel free to email me with any queries or concerns, or catch me in the morning to arrange an alternative time to meet up.  We also have parent teacher meetings twice a term, so you can always book in for one of those sessions when the time arrives.

Here's to a great term, and a great start to school!

Ka kite ano,
Sarah
